Just a few short years ago, before I had heard of the “Getting to 50/50” movement or of Sheryl Sandberg’s “Lean In”, I was a hot mess. I was trying my darnedest to have it all…and for me that meant doing it all. Particularly at home. I was the manager of almost everything when it came to household and family management. I knew when the laundry had to be done, when we were almost out of paper products, and when our dependents were due for wellness appointments. I planned our weekends, vacations and special occasions. My husband certainly helped and was good at implementing the things he agreed to. But, ultimately, I was the primary person responsible for keeping track of it all and making sure it happened. I was exhausted, frustrated, angry, and overwhelmed.
I don’t remember when or why, but at some point I realized things had to change. I did not want my husband to help me…I wanted both of us, not just me, to be fully responsible for the sh*t ton amount of work that is needed to keep a household and family going. So I tried different ways and different tools for changing things up. It was a lot of trial and error, lots of frustration and many moments of wanting to give up and just go back to status quo. It was a lot of texts and conversations (some of them heated). Eventually, we got there and it is truly amazing.
Are things all rainbows and roses every day? Absolutely not. But it is a helluva lot better than what it was before. I have time, energy and motivation to pursue my career, interests and health & fitness goals - all things I couldn’t even fathom having in our pre-50/50 days. It was hard work to make the shift happen...and I don’t for a moment ever regret pushing through to make it happen.
I want every beautiful, strong, hard-working Mama to get to this wonderful place. This place where your load will be lessened when it comes to household & family management.
